The train from Sydney had advanced 1 CONC 200 yards from the terminus, when it came into collision with the 1 CONC incoming train from Strathfield. The screams of the passengers 1 CONC attracted the attention of persons in the vicinity, and a large number 1 CONC of porters and railway employees hastened to the spot with saws and 1 CONC axes and proceeded to extricate the injured passengers. The scene was 1 CONC a heart- rending one as the wounded were brought out. Some were 1 CONC carried away on shutters, others on extemporised stretchers, others 1 CONC again carried in the porters' arms; while blood was seen on all sides. 1 CONC The injured were taken to the various hospitals. How the catastrophe 1 CONC occurred is at present in doubt. The engine-drivers and firemen are 1 CONC not at present able to say anything owing to the injuries they have 1 CONC sustained. The first car of the incoming train and a first-class 1 CONC smoking carriage were telescoped at both ends. The engine broke away 1 CONC the front of the woodwork and crashed into the interior of the first 1 CONC carriage, a distance of 12ft. The carriages following were forced 1 CONC through from the rear. Both engines were completely wrecked. The scene 1 CONC of the wreck was enveloped in the escaping steam from the broken 1 CONC pipes, and the damaged cars were filled with scalding vapour. Several 1 CONC of the passengers who were fortunate enough to escape injury by the 1 CONC breaking timbers were terribly disfigured some of the injured 1 CONC passengers dragged themselves from among the debris bleeding or 1 CONC scalded. One gentleman seems to have come in contact with the steam 1 CONC pipe; but he got out blindly and groped his way about. The steam 1 CONC scalded him fearfully about the head, face, and hands, and he 1 CONC presented a terrible spectacle. The skin hung from his face in great 1 CONC flakes and dangled from his hands. Others who were unable, owing to 1 CONC the injuries they had received, to release themselves, were taken out 1 CONC bruised and covered with blood, and their friends did not recognise 1 CONC them. The following arc known to be among the injured : -Mr. E. L. 1 CONC Jones (Messrs. David Jones and Co.), badly hurt ; Mr. Joseph Johnson 1 CONC (Concord), badly hurt ; Miss Horton (Burwood), injuries to hands ; Mr. 1 CONC Richard Grainge and Mr. and Mrs. Hort (Ashfield) : Mr. Fallick 1 CONC (Homebush) ; Mr. Pyman (Council Clerk at Enfield) : Messrs. Garson, 1 CONC and R. Beckett (Concord) : Mr. A. J. Brierly, Mrs. Osborne, and Dean 1 CONC M'Carthy (Burwood) ; Mr. W Beaumont (Strathfield) ; and driver Pierce. 1 CONC The Driver Pierce was injured by the boiling water. Fireman Hore was 1 CONC killed; and Messrs. William Dean (solicitor), Thomas Ryan, and Thomas 1 CONC Banks were each badly scalded. Messrs. William Wilson, W. Green, Harry 1 CONC Berry, Ralston M'Kenzie, and Bulmer, were badly injured, and Mr. 1 CONC Quodling (Railway Department) was badly scalded in the face. Messrs. 1 CONC Gillies, Nesbitt, and Miss Davies were also hurt. None of the 1 CONC passengers booked by the Goulburn train were hurt. All the passengers 1 CONC injured were confined to the Strathfield train. 1 CONT Later. 1 CONT The whole damage to the railway property was mainly that caused by the 1 CONC telescoping of the carriages. Parts of the two engines were curled and 1 CONC twisted just if they were made of paper; but no injury was done to the 1 CONC permanent way. Some of the passengers were so badly injured and 1 CONC overcome by the shock that they were rendered more or less incapable. 1 CONC The incoming train was badly smashed and the other had only part of 1 CONC one car and portions of the locomotive damaged. The suburban train was 1 CONC running to time at the uphill speed of six miles an hour, when the 1 CONC outward train ran into it. The confusion and excitement amongst the 1 CONC passengers by the suburban train are indescribable. Most of the 1 CONC injuries were those from scalds, and every one of the passengers were 1 CONC hurt more or less, and the driver and fireman of the suburban train 1 CONC were very much scalded. The latter expired in the struggle to get out 1 CONC of the car. The passengers had escape through the windows, all the 1 CONC doors being locked. Dean M'Carthy was severely scalded, and there is 1 CONC little hope of his recovery. Mr. Thornton Bulmer, aged twenty-six 1 CONC years, a barrister, was scalded in the face and on the body, and he 1 CONC died at half-past five o'clock this afternoon. 1 CONT 1 CONT Newspaper Extract from The Sydney Morning Herald Thursday 1 Nov 1894 1 CONT 1 CONT Thornton Bulmer, 26, barrister, admitted to Prince Alfred Hospital, 1 CONC burned and scalded about the face, arms, legs, and body, very severe 1 CONC shock to the system, died at 5.15 p.m. 1 CONT 1 CONT Newspaper Extract from The Sydney Morning Herald Friday 2 Nov 1894 1 CONT 1 CONT FUNERALS OF OTHER VICTIMS. 1 CONT The funeral of the late Mr. William H.
